With great love and sadness, we announce the passing of Colonel David Thomas Carney, CD (Ret’d), on April 29th, 2026 at the Ottawa General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Dave is survived by his devoted wife Ruth Anne Carney, children Sarah Carney (Craig Silverman), Parker Carney (Francesca Stea), four adoring grandchildren Finn, Miles, Francesco, and Isabella, as well as niece Janet Jewitt, nephews John and Paul Tymchuk, and many relatives and close friends.

Born in Oakville, he grew up in mining towns in Northern Ontario and earned a Bachelor’s in civil engineering from Queen’s University and a Master’s in surveying engineering from the University of New Brunswick. Dave had a decorated military career of nearly 30 years that was followed by leadership roles in the federal government. He served in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the U.K., and worked in the Canadian Arctic, among many other places. In retirement he helped establish and lead the Canadian Military Engineers Association and was a valued volunteer and member of City View United Church. Dave’s work and leadership were recognized by the International Cartographers Association, Natural Resources Canada, and with a Canadian Military Engineer Branch Commendation.

Dave’s most treasured role was as the dedicated husband of 51 years to his loving wife Ruth and as a father and grandfather. He was a loyal friend, a role model to many, and a person of steadfast, kind, and principled character. Dave was known for building relationships that lasted decades. He was often a man of few words but he would do anything for his family, friends, and community.

The family expresses its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Dominick Bossé and the caring oncology, emergency, surgery, and palliative teams at the Queensway Carleton and Ottawa General hospitals, with special thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Shouldice, Dr. Anne Kneale and Dr. Rayan Delbani.

Family and friends are welcome to join for a celebration of Dave’s life at Beechwood Cemetery on Monday, May 11th at 10 a.m., to be followed by a reception and internment. Reverend Laura Springate will officiate. If desired, donations in his memory can be made to City View United Church or Soldier On.
