Portrait de Charlotte « Shirley » Cordick

Charlotte (Shirley) Cordick (née Burke) passed away peacefully in Ottawa on Saturday, October 31, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was 86 years old.

Born in River Bourgeois, Nova Scotia, Shirley graduated from Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1959 and began her teaching career in her home province. In 1963, she married Richard (Dick) Cordick. As a military wife, she embraced a life of many moves and many responsibilities, all with warmth, strength and grace. Shirley and her beloved Dick shared a love of life and travel, living in Nova Scotia and British Columbia before settling in Ontario, where they made their final home together. Yet through all her travels, her heart never left Cape Breton.

Food was Shirley’s love language. She could cook anything, and she loved preparing elaborate meals for family and friends, always with joy. She created beautiful embroidery that many family members still cherish. And wherever she lived, Shirley made friends, for she had a rare gift for connecting with people.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dick, in 2021; her parents, Charles and Angela (née Robertson) Burke; and her sister, Kathleen Pothier.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Lisa of Stittsville and Paul (Sheri) of Vancouver; and her siblings, Allan (Jeanne) Burke of Dartmouth, NS; David Burke of St. Peter’s, NS; John (Jackie) of Oakville; Judy of Ottawa; Lloyd (Cynthia) of St. Peter’s, NS; and Doreen (Brian) of River Bourgeois, NS.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Wellings Place, Stittsville, Ontario, followed by a private family burial on Monday morning. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers who helped keep Shirley home as long as possible. The family would also like to express heartfelt thanks to Shirley’s dear friend Leona for her love and support.

  1. Sincere condolences to Lisa, Paul, and Shirley’s entire family. We grew up with Shirley in River Bourgeois, and remained good friends throughout her life, wherever they were posted in the Canadian Military, and upon retirement. May she Rest In Peace. ❤️❤️🙏

  2. Condolences to Lisa, Paul, and Shirley’s entire family. We grew up with Shirley, and remained good friends throughout her life.
We have fond memories. RIP Shirley.❤️🙏

  3. Food was indeed Aunt Shirley’s love language, and she loved us all very much. I have early memories of asking to be excused from the table after holiday meals she hosted, and always hearing her distinctive voice urging, « Lori Ann, won’t you have a little more? » As adults, we remained gobsmacked by the gargantuan feasts she produced, all top-level gourmet, and the quantities of leftovers we took home with us. She was passionate about keeping the family close, and her passing has left a space in our lives that nobody can fill. Heartbroken.

  4. Shirley made me so welcome when I moved to the Wellings.

  5. Condolences to the family.

  6. Thinking of you all and holding you close in my heart. Sending the family all of my love during this difficult time. May the love and cherished memories you shared bring some comfort in the days ahead. 🙏🫂

  7. It is with heavy heart that I send my condolences to Paul and Lisa and all of Shirley’s immediate family. Shirley was a dear friend and my favourite cousin – we were birthday twins & often commented on how special that was. I have always been welcomed and entertained by both Shirley and Dick over the many years we have spent together. Every get together, in Lanark, always included an extravagant feast. She was the queen of Christmas trees & Christmas baking. So many memories… I will miss her voice on the other end of my phone, our long chats, her sense of humor and my visits with her in her latest home which she enjoyed so much. Rest in peace, dear heart.
