Alfreda Marie Sibbald (née DeVillers)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Alfreda Marie Sibbald (née DeVillers) on August 3, 2026, in Ottawa, Ontario.

Born in Penetanguishene, Ontario, Alfreda was the third child of Alfred DeVillers and Médora DeVillers (née Labatte). She was predeceased by her sister Elise and is lovingly remembered by her sisters Claire (Jean Sauvé) and Giselle, and by her brother the Honorable Paul DeVillers (P.C., LL. B).

While she did not ultimately pursue a life as a nun, having fallen in love and chosen a different path, those years remained a meaningful part of her spiritual life.

Alfreda dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching. She began her career in Georgetown and then taught in a one room schoolhouse in Cognashene Bay.  She returned home to teach alongside her mother, Médora, at Ecole St. Joseph/Ecole St. Croix in Penetanguishene.  Alfreda retired in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education and the many students whose lives she touched.

Alfreda shared a wonderful life with her beloved husband, Raymond Morris Sibbald.  Together they enjoyed boating and cottaging with their friends and family on beautiful Georgian Bay.  In retirement, they embraced their love for travel visiting Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii, while Alfreda also cherished sailing on many cruises with her beloved sisters.

After many years of caring for her mother with Alzheimer’s disease, Alfreda courageously lived with the disease herself.  She received excellent care, at St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa, where she spent the last 6 years of her life. She was blessed with daily visits by her son, Christopher, whose love and presence brought her great comfort.

Alfreda will be greatly missed by her son Christopher, her daughter in-law Ann Marie, her cherished grandchildren Stephanie and Liam, her siblings, her nieces and nephews, her cousins and her friends.

She is now reunited with her beloved Raymond, who predeceased her on December 6, 2024.  Together they rest in a shared urn united for eternity.

A joint funeral, celebrating the lives of Alfreda and Raymond will be held at St. Ann’s Church, Penetanguishene at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 18, 2026. Internment at St. Ann’s Cemetery will immediately follow the service.
