In 1826, a construction camp at the meeting point of the Rideau and Ottawa rivers became known as Bytown. Over the next two centuries, that rough settlement would grow into Ottawa, the capital of Canada.
This transformation was not inevitable. It was built through ambition, hard work, public service and, at times, considerable personal sacrifice.
To mark the Bytown Bicentennial, Beechwood Cemetery is proud to introduce a new ebook, Bytown at 200: The People Who Built a City. This collection shares the stories of 22 people buried at Beechwood whose lives helped shape the foundations of Ottawa.
They were engineers, soldiers, physicians, clergy members, merchants, industrialists, politicians, artists, journalists and civic leaders. Some built the Rideau Canal and the city’s earliest stone buildings. Others established businesses, organized public institutions, treated the sick, maintained civic order or preserved Ottawa’s history for future generations.
These were not perfect people, nor were they all celebrated during their lifetimes. Some held views shaped by the prejudices and divisions of their era. Others experienced controversy, financial failure or personal tragedy. Their stories reflect the complexity of Bytown itself—a community shaped as much by disagreement and hardship as by cooperation and progress.
What connects them is their commitment to building something that would endure.
Beechwood Cemetery provides a unique place from which to explore these stories. Its grounds contain the graves of many people who helped transform Bytown from a military construction settlement into a lumber town, an incorporated municipality and, ultimately, a national capital. Their monuments form a physical record of Ottawa’s development.
The Bytown Bicentennial is more than an anniversary. It is an opportunity to reconsider how Ottawa was built and to recognize the people whose work continues to shape the city around us.
