Doug passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2024 in Ottawa. He will be affectionally remembered by Carole, his wife of 63 years; his daughter Susan, his son John (Diane LeBel); his son David (Colleen MacFarlane) and Doug’s sister Ann.

He was a proud graduate of Carleton University in Political Science and Public Administration and of Queen’s University in Education. He spent his life learning and teaching. Over the years he enjoyed driving his many cars, most memorably three times to the Pacific Ocean. Ever mindful of his Scottish heritage, he was known to enjoy many drams of fine Scottish Single Malts, as well as fine Italian, German and French Wines with fine food.

The arrival of his four grand-daughters brought much happiness to him; Marie-Rose LeBel-MacFarlene (Justin-Thomas Fortin); Kathleen Crosthwaite (Will); Megan MacFarlane (Karan Ghandi) and Christine MacFarlane (Dan Gravel). The birth of his Great-Grandson Lukas Anders Crosthwaite added more joy to the family, as did the recent addition of his Great-Granddaughter Elizabeth Natalie Crosthwaite.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Beechwood Cemetery.  A private memorial will take place in the magnificent Valley of the Outaouais once his dear Carole joins him.

I worked with Doug MacFarlane in the Carleton Board of Education for several years as his department head. He was a solid and reliable colleague and a congenial and entertaining companion. On several occasions he stood in for me when I needed his help.
Cheryl and I are saddend to learn of his death. He was a good friend and a good man. Our condolences to Carole and his family.

Carole,
Thinking of you in the loss of your dear husband, Doug. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Though Doug may be gone , I believe that part of him lives on in all who knew and admired him - your family, friends, his colleagues and students. The world is a better place because of his positive influence. Sending you love, peace, comfort, and strength to carry on during these difficult weeks of grieving.
