On August 13, 2024, at the age of 71, Dermot died peacefully after a prolonged battle with ALS. He leaves behind his wife, Mary, his daughter, Susan (Mark Palmer), his son, Mike (Nicola McGroarty) and two cherished grand-daughters, Evelyn and Maeve. He will also be missed by his brother and sister, Pat Nally and Joan O’Neill, as well as his friends and extended family.
Born in Ireland, Mary and Dermot emigrated to Canada in 1987 with their children and built a life together in Ottawa. Dermot was a rugby player, wood-worker, volunteer, and a life-long supporter of the Crystal Palace Football Club.
Dermot lived life to the fullest and was sad to ‘leave the party early’.
Friends and family are invited to gather for a celebration of life on Thursday September 5th, 2024, at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa: 1-2pm Service; and 2-4pm reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS Society of Canada.

Mary, Susan and Michael - it is difficult to understand how you are feeling in the absence of such a joy missing from your life. Dermot was incredible kind, funny and exuded light in all of his interactions. It is devastating that he is no longer with us, but I know that his spirit carries on in both his actions, and with you. We are devastated for your loss and wish you recovery, love and warmth in the years to come. Through and through Dermot was an incredible man, who touched many lives. It was an honour to know him. - Love Jess and Mike
To Mary and all generations of the family:
I am very sorry for your loss. Dermot will live on in the memory of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
