It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Alain Serge Hodak on November 25th 2022 at the age of 64 following a nearly three-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Diagnosed in spring of 2019, Alain battled the disease with courage, and faced its consequences with grace and dignity.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather, he leaves behind his wife Suzanne (nee Côté), his children Isabelle (Christian Michaud), Christian (Janelle Malo) and Marie-Eve (Chris Fliesser) and his precious grandchildren Élodie and Raphaël.
Alain was predeceased by his parents: Jean Hodak and Rosette Lessard as well as his sister Jocelyne.
He also leaves in grief his brother Michel (Monique), sisters Nicole (Marc), Carole (Alain) and Tara (Nico) as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
For most of his career, he worked as an engineer in the Department of National Defence. He passed along his love for engineering to his son, Christian and his daughter, Marie-Eve. Alain was passionate about research and technology development. He was so proud to be the recipient of the first drone-assisted lung transplant.
Above all, he was devoted to his family and friends, and he had an incredible sense of humour.
The Celebration of Life will be held at the Beechwood Funeral and Cemetery Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue in Ottawa on Saturday April 22, 2023 at 1 p.m.
Family and friends are all welcome to join us in sharing beautiful memories of Alain.
For those unable to attend, it will be possible to watch the ceremony live via livestream. Click on the above tab to register.
If you feel compelled to donate to a cause in honor of Alain, donations to UHN Foundation to support lung transplant research and innovation at Toronto General Hospital would be appreciated by the family. Please visit uhnfoundation.ca/tribute or call 416-603-5300. In keeping with Alain’s interests in innovation and research, the funds will be used for continued development of drone-based organ transport systems and support of rapid diagnostics technologies to enable more effective organ assessment and allocation in lung transplantation.

I worked with Alain for several years in the Light Armoured Vehicle project and Equipment Management Team. At that time he was the Systems Engineer for the LAVs. Alain was a good and fair man. He was a heck of a driver too. Sorry to hear of his passing.
