It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our cherished husband, father, and grandfather, Reid Scharfe on October 23rd, 2021 at the age of 78. Reid passed away in hospital with his wife and daughter holding his hands.

Reid is survived by his wife of 57 years, Diane Scharfe (nee Stubbs) and his daughter, Amie (Dave O’Neill). He leaves behind three adoring grandchildren (Kieran, Liam and Seamus) who miss their Boppa immensely. Reid was predeceased by his son Brandon. Reid also leaves behind several sisters, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Reid left home at a young age to pursue a dream. He spent the next 28 years as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy and continued his dedication to Canada as a public servant for the remaining 18 years of his career. Reid’s warmth, fairness, and kindness touched everyone who came into contact with him. He always had a story to share, all told with a welcoming smile, and a bright twinkle in his eyes. He never met a stranger and loved nothing more than to share a laugh with someone. He was a lover of reading – anything military or history  related were his favourites. Being an avid gardener Reid felt at home with his hands in the earth. Reid was a devoted husband and built a beautiful life with his wife. He was a loving, supportive father and the best Boppa (grandpa) anyone could hope for. He will be forever missed.

A private service will be held for Reid’s immediate family. We invite family and friends to leave a message in the virtual guestbook or to make a donation in Reid’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Diane, Amie and family, I remember Reid as a very down to earth man who you could easily talk to. He was friendly and always made someone feel right at home. My heart goes out to all of you at this very sad time. May your memories of him always put a smile on your face and keep him close to your heart. I know he will be immensely missed xoxo

I have many fond memories of Reid as our paths crossed frequently throughout our military careers. I remember him as a kind man of high character who left an indelible impression on everyone he met. Our thoughts are with the family at this most difficult of times. Fair winds old Buddy.

Aunt Diane, Amy and family,
Our deepest condolences
Uncle Reid was a kind and wonderful person and loved to tell his military stories. I am so happy I was able to speak to him over the past few months. He really wanted to meet Alex, and vice versa, to talk Navy. Unfortunately, time did not allow.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all ?

Diane and Amie I am so sorry for your profound loss. Uncle Reid was so important to me in my childhood and youth! I have so many fond memories with him. He did always have the twinkle in his eye and a great laugh and generous spirit. I remember perhaps my earliest memory of him when I was 4 and I locked myself in the bathroom and couldn’t open the door. I was crying and Reid came to my rescue with a great sense of humour. Many visits in Kingston where I considered Amie my baby sister ?. The summer I spent with you guys in Bermuda. I was 15 and Reid took me to the luxurios Hamilton hotel on Horseshoe bay and bought me a cocktail and convinced the staff to let me play the grand piano because I was “really good”. I played Billy Joel, my idol who happened to have played the same piano the week before! Driving me to a friends when I was 17 and mom and I had no car and silently slipping me a twenty dollar bill! Heart of gold. Loved his family so much and made a difference in my young life. May beautiful memories ease your grief. Love you. Sarah.

To Diane, Amie, Family Members and Friends,
The members of the Canadian Forces Supplementary Radio (SUPRAD) System Oldtimers Association were deeply saddened by the news of Reid's passing. Reid was well known to many of us. He will forever be remembered as a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Navy and a valued winger (friend). Reid always had a big smile and he never hesitated to reach out and lend a helping hand. All those who had the privilege of serving with Reid, will cherish the memories of all the laughs and the enjoyable times that were shared. Please know that as members of your extended military family, we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

We crossed paths many times in our career and he always had a twinkle in his eye, a smile on his face and a warm chuckle to greet you. A gentleman I was always happy to see.
My deepest condolences to all the family.
