SUMMARY:Western Tour of Beechwood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Sign up here! Walking through the western half of Beechwood Cemetery is like walking through the history of early Canada. This tour visits some of the cemetery’s oldest sections\, beautiful gardens\, and the Mausoleum. Tour attendees will be able to connect familiar Ottawa street names to prominent individuals and families who helped build the city. Participants will also learn how what started as a local community cemetery grew into Canada’s National Cemetery.  The tour of Beechwood Cemetery is led by trained volunteers and focuses on local history and notable features and sections within this National Historic Site.   The tour is free of charge\, and is family friendly. The route for the Stroll is a gentle 1.5-2 hour walk and is wheelchair accessible. Please wear good walking shoes\, clothing suitable for the weather\, apply bug spray and bring water if needed.  For the Western tour\, your guide will meet you at the Gazebo which is next to the Beechwood National Memorial Center (the closet street entrance is Beechwood Ave).  Please note the Beechwood National Memorial Centre is closed to the public on Sundays\, therefore please use the washroom before arrival.  Be sure to come back again for the Eastern Tour of Beechwood Cemetery!

DESCRIPTION:August 12 2026 6:45 PM | Beechwood Cemetery – Section 34 (opposite the tank)  Beechwood Cemetery is proud to launch Under the Leaves: Poetry at Beechwood\, a new annual poetry series celebrating the voices\, histories\, and creative spirit that shape our nation’s capital.  The inaugural edition\, Bytown to Ottawa: A Bicentennial Poetry Gathering\, is timed between the birth anniversary of William Pittman Lett\, Bytown’s earliest recognized poet and a foundational civic storyteller. Held next to his gravesite\, this gathering honours Lett’s legacy while creating a compelling bridge to the vibrant literary community that defines Ottawa today.  In partnership with the City of Ottawa Poet Laureate David O’Meara and Blaine Marchand of the League of Canadian Poets\, this event will feature:   Tribute readings from Lett’s original works Local contemporary poets- Cameron Anstee\, Frances Boyle & Jean Van Loon-offering response pieces that reflect Ottawa’s evolution over two centuries  Under the Leaves: Poetry at Beechwood will offer an enduring space for poets\, storytellers\, and audiences to gather each year\, exploring the intersections of heritage\, identity\, and artistic expression.  This series creates a thoughtful cultural tradition that reflects the city’s evolving narrative and honours the voices that shape it. Join us as we honour the past\, elevate today’s voices\, and cultivate a new cultural tradition at Beechwood.  A city’s story lives through its poets. Come experience it with us\, under the leaves.
