It is with deep sadness that Manjula Banerjee announces the passing of her beloved husband Sourendra Kumar Banerjee. Sourendra was the loving father of Mausumi and father-in-law of Jaime and doting grandfather of Aveen and Amrita. He was born on September 3, 1933 in Durgagarh, India where he was the middle child of Satrendra and Binapani Banerjee.  He is predeceased by his parents and his sisters Latika and Khuku and his brothers Ajoy, Tony, Bijoy and Gobu.  Sourendra had a joyful childhood with his family and friends, excelling in school and sports. He became a math professor at the University of Delhi and then did his Ph.D in mathematics at the University of Toronto on a Commonwealth Scholarship. He was the first person to earn his Ph.D at Massey College in 1965.  He returned to India to get married and then taught at McMaster University and the University of Massachusetts before settling to teach in Nova Scotia where he raised his small family. After retiring, Sourendra and Manjula moved to Ottawa to be closer to their grandchildren and spent 18 happy years watching them grow. Sourendra was always kind and gentle. He passed peacefully early in the morning of June 17, 2021 in Ottawa. Given COVID-19 restrictions, a private ceremony will be held for now with a greater celebration of his life to follow when permitted. In lieu of flowers, the family invites family and friends to donate to a charity of their choice.
