It is with great sadness that his family announces the sudden passing of David Wright in the morning on Monday, June 7th, 2021, at the age of 57.  David was an avid reader and; enjoyed hiking, biking and he traveled extensively. His passion was European football; David was a dedicated fan of the Tottenham Hotspur F.C., the Bolton Wanderers F.C. and the England Football Team.  David grew up in Edmonton, Alberta and received his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Alberta, followed by a Master’s Degree in History from York University in Toronto.

David retired in 2018 after a successful 31-year career with the Federal Public Service, working in various departments, including the Department of Justice, Canada Customs and Revenue Agency, Canada Border Services Agency, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  David was an accomplished cellist and an active member of the Ottawa classical music community, belonging to several orchestras and ensembles, including the Lansdowne String Quartet. A valued member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra (OSO) for 24 years, he served as the musician representative to the OSO board.

David leaves behind his beloved spouse, Josée Therrien and his in-laws Noëlla and Jacques. A dear son of the late Francis and Barbara Wright, he also leaves behind his brothers, Christopher, Adrian and Ian, his nephews and nieces, Tim, Robert, Kelly, Emily, Terri, Sarah, Stephen, Bronwyn and Simon, and his great nephews and great nieces, Abigail, Anna, Theodore, Alexander and Sydney.   The celebration of David’s life will be held at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, when COVID restrictions allow for a larger gathering.  In lieu of flowers, a donation in the memory of David made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation would be appreciated.

I worked with David and remember him as a model colleague, excellent in every way, erudite, and always friendly. He was unforgettable for all those reasons, and also amazed me as an accomplished cellist. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Our deepest sympathy to Josée and all of David’s family and friends.
Saying goodbye to someone we love is heartbreaking. We will forever cherish and find comfort in all the special memories that we have of David. These special times usually involved a lively conversation over a pint and a good meal. David was a gentleman, dedicated, intelligent, caring, thoughtful, and funny. We will miss his sense of humor, his friendship, and his heartfelt laugh that was truly contagious.

I had the privilege of working with David at IRCC, he was a joy to work with and a sincere and, honest individual, always enjoyed our morning chats - he will be missed by many.

With great sadness we heard of the passing of our former colleague David Wright.

We remember David as a dedicated and hard-working historian, a pleasant travel companion (often in unpleasant circumstances and regions), a well-read and informed discussion partner. On a personal level, we also recall his love of classical music and performance on the cello, his willingness to explain essential Canadian features (like hockey) to non-Canadian colleagues, his sense of humour and infectious laughter.

His former colleagues from DOJ, Canada: Ruth Bettina Birn, Peter Kremer, Markus Eikel, Valentina Sivayeva, Jan Erik Schulte, Volker Rieß, Dieter Pohl, Knut Stang.

Such a fine man with a warm and ready smile. David's kind and gentle nature, clever humour, endearing puns and love of life are hallmarks of his outlook. David lived well. The loss is profound and our hearts are with Josée and all of David's family. Debora & Tim

My deepest condolences to Josée and the whole family. I am still shocked and cannot believe that David is no longer with us.

I met David in 1993 as a cello partner in the Ottawa chamber orchestra and since then we are very good friends – we managed to stay in close contact over all the many years even though I live far away in Austria. David was such a great, wonderful, smart, thoughtful friend, with a great sense of humor, I will miss him and the many enjoyable conversations with him a lot.

Dear Josée,

I am so sorry for your loss of David. He was such a good cellist. I could always see him from my chair in the Ottawa Symphony and he was so solid and accomplished a player. I will miss him a lot.

Josee.
Despite the distances David was a good friend and dear cousin. Whenever we met we just started where we had left off. Usually on the ups and downs of our beloved Bolton Wanderers FC. Jane and I send you our deepest sympathy, love and affection. One day we expect to see you in Portugal .
