Due to government-imposed restrictions related to COVID-19, attendance will be restricted to a limited number of individuals at any given time. We appreciate your patience and understanding of the restrictions in place.

Peacefully, on September 19, 2021 at t he age of 71. Beloved dad of Eric and Randy Kakegamick. Proud grandfather of Isaiah Thunder Blue Kakegamick and Makwa Kakegamick. Frances Kakegamick is Eric and Randy's mother who, Bubba, still had a great friendship and bond with.

Bubba was a writer, hockey enthusiast, and loved the Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs. Bubba attended McIntosh Residential school in McIntosh ON. Bubba lived here in Ottawa, Ontario and called it home. He worked for the federal government for over 25 years and retired.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue on Thursday, September 23, 2021 from 5 to 8:00PM. A Graveside Service will be held at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 1:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, in memorium donations to The Indian Residential School Society would be appreciated.

This Old Drum

Ever since I heard the grandfather drum,

I have always, had this dream,

That I would understand grandfather and hum,

But it seems to be, only, a dream.

No matter how long I have listened to this drum,

I keep losing it and it's beat.

How long, how long must I sing this song and hum

To catch grandfather's heart beat.

Many moons and many winters I have dreamed

And still I remain, remain alone.

I've looked at the night and saw, it gleamed,

Made my heart smile as it shone.

Many times, I have returned from this full night

And looked at this old drum.

I wait and wait until it says it's alright

To dream again and drum.

I've listened to it's soul and it's heart beat,

It always moved my spirit.

In some future time, I'll make this drum's heart beat,

And it will have a soul spirit.

I met Mitch over 20 yrs ago through his son Randy Kakegamick. My sincere condolences to Randy, Eric and the family.

That poem above really got me. It's beautiful and powerful. I remember "Bubba" as we called him sharing his poems with me and proudly showing the one that won first place in a competition.

When he retired from the government, he proudly showed off his shiny plaque they had given him. He was a proud yet simple man.

I have many fond memories of him that I will always cherish. I will really miss him, his smile and his infectious laughter. We were always laughing. He once told me that 'a day is never wasted if you're laughing'. That's so true.

Rest in peace Bubba. We are all going to miss you.

Sad to hear. Mitch was always fun to hang out with. Had fun during the old Odawa Ball League days. Love that poem. Deepest condolences to Randy, Eric, and Jenn and the rest of the family. Take care.
