The Dormition of The Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church
In 2006, Beechwood Cemetery and The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church entered into a meaningful partnership to establish a dedicated resting place for members of Ottawa’s Greek Orthodox community. Located within Section 51S, this sacred area of Beechwood Cemetery is reserved exclusively for parishioners of the Church and reflects the enduring relationship between faith, family, culture, and remembrance.
Containing more than 200 lots of varying sizes, the section was thoughtfully created to serve the needs of the community for many generations to come. More than simply a place of burial, it stands as a lasting expression of the Greek Orthodox community’s presence, traditions, and spiritual heritage in Canada’s capital.
The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church has long played an important role in the cultural and spiritual life of Ottawa’s Greek community. Rooted in the traditions of the Greek Orthodox faith, the parish continues to provide a strong sense of identity, continuity, and support to generations of families. The dedicated section at Beechwood ensures that these traditions remain present not only in life, but also in remembrance.
The word “Dormition” refers to the “falling asleep” of the Virgin Mary, an important feast within the Orthodox Christian tradition that symbolizes peace, eternal life, and spiritual transition. This understanding of remembrance and eternal rest is deeply connected to Orthodox funeral and memorial practices, where prayer, ritual, and community remain central.
Today, the Greek Orthodox section at Beechwood Cemetery stands as both a sacred spiritual space and a reflection of Ottawa’s multicultural landscape. It honours the contributions of Greek Canadians to the city and preserves a place where faith, heritage, and memory continue to live on for future generations.
