Polish Community
In 2001, Beechwood Cemetery and the Polish Congress of Ottawa agreed to establish a dedicated section for the exclusive use of families of Polish descent. More than 100 lots of varying sizes within Station 11 of Section 110 were set aside to serve the needs of Ottawa’s Polish community for generations to come.
The development reflected not only the growing presence of the Polish-Canadian community in Ottawa, but also the importance of ensuring that cultural identity, traditions, language, and faith could continue to be expressed within Canada’s national place of remembrance.
On November 1, 2007, the Polish Congress of Ottawa, in partnership with The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation, completed a central monument dedicated to the Polish community of Ottawa.
The Polish Community Monument
The monument serves as both a place of reflection and a symbol of the enduring contributions, resilience, and faith of Polish Canadians who helped shape the social, cultural, and economic fabric of Ottawa and Canada.
Prominently engraved on the monument are the words “Maryjo Królowo Polski, módl się za nami” (“Mary, Queen of Poland, pray for us”). This phrase holds deep spiritual and national significance within Polish history and identity.
The devotion to Mary as the Queen of Poland dates back centuries and became especially important during periods of war, occupation, political repression, and national struggle.
For many Polish families, faith and national identity were inseparable, and the invocation reflects both a prayer for protection and a reminder of perseverance through hardship. Including this phrase on the monument honours the strong Catholic traditions that played a central role in the lives of many Polish immigrants who came to Canada seeking freedom, stability, and opportunity.
The monument also bears the inscription “Polonia Semper Fidelis” (“Poland Ever Faithful” or “The Polish People Always Faithful”). The phrase reflects the enduring loyalty of the Polish people to their culture, faith, heritage, and homeland, even when Poland itself disappeared from the map during periods of partition and foreign occupation. It symbolizes the unwavering commitment of Polish communities around the world to preserve their identity, traditions, and collective memory despite displacement and adversity.
Within the context of Beechwood Cemetery, the inscription recognizes the dedication of Ottawa’s Polish community to maintaining its cultural roots while contributing proudly to Canadian society.
Together, these inscriptions transform the monument into more than a physical landmark. They represent remembrance, faith, sacrifice, cultural continuity, and the lasting connection between Polish heritage and the Canadian story.
