Portrait de Vojislav Petrovic

It is with profound sadness and immense love that we announce the passing of Vojislav Petrovic, at the age of 83.

Vojislav was the beloved husband of Josipa Petrovic (née Slogar) for 56 wonderful years. Together, they built a life grounded in love, hard work and a deep love for family.

He was a proud and loving father to Tom Petrovic (Sue) and Marina Petrovic (Francis Roy-Moreau). While he cherished being a husband and father, his favorite role in life was being Deda to his two adored granddaughters, Mila and Sophie. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his girls, sneaking them toonies, making them laugh, and showering them with the unconditional love only a grandfather can give.

Those who knew Vojislav knew him as a tough guy on the outside, but anyone fortunate enough to get close to him quickly discovered the giant softie underneath. He had a generous heart and rarely missed an opportunity to help a friend or neighbor. He took great pride in helping others with renovations, repairs, and projects of every kind, always sharing his time and expertise generously. If something needed fixing, Vojislav was ready to help.

If there was one thing that rivaled his love for his family, it was his love for dogs. A familiar sight around the neighbourhood, Vojislav rarely left home without a pocket full of treats. Dogs seemed to know exactly who he was, often making a beeline straight for him. To countless four-legged friends, he was affectionately known as the « Cookie Man. » Every dog received a kind word, a scratch behind the ears, and a well-earned treat.

He took immense pride in his home and also had a special relationship with his lawn. Lawn maintenance was never simply a chore; it was a craft. It brought him genuine satisfaction to care for his home, and he did so with a level of dedication that family and neighbours often joked about and admired.

Above all else, Vojislav will be remembered for his steadfast love of family, his generosity, his sense of humour, and the countless ways he quietly cared for others. The lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he shared will remain with those who knew him forever.

While our hearts are broken by his loss, we find comfort in imagining him watching over us, walking his beloved Kobi, keeping an eye on the family he loved so dearly, and, undoubtedly, still judging everyone’s lawn.

He will be forever missed, lovingly remembered, and always carried in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vojislav’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada  or the Ottawa Humane Society.

A private family will take place at later date.

Forever our husband, father, Deda, friend, and Cookie Man.

  1. I met Vojislav at many of the family gatherings. Despite our language barriers, I felt we got along quite well. I referred to him as my brother from another mother. It’s quite obvious that he was a man of strong convictions and seriousness. And it turns out a man with a very soft heart for his grandchildren, his immediate family, neighborhood dogs, and his well manicured lawn. Although I never had the opportunity to critique the lawn with my own eyes, I’m sure it was well manicured.
I can only imagine the feelings of great loss, while everyone rejoice and cherish in the many fond memories.
My sincere condolences during this time.

  2. We were sorry receive the news from Kent that your Dad had passed away.

I first met your Mr. Petrovic (yes, he was always Mr. Petrovic to me) in the 1980s when Adrienne and Marina would get together after school. Hard to believe how the time has flown by as Sophie and Mila are even past that age now.

Your Dad lived to see you find happiness, security and love. He faced challenges many of us have fortunately never experienced. I am certain he will have died content knowing that his choice to move to Canada provided opportunities for the Petrovic clan.

And the lawn. I was always green eyed at the success of the lawn. While mine was brown with only scraggly pale green weeds, his merely three blocks away was lush and a deep colour one could only imagine. Of course it was enhanced by your Mother’s stunning flowers.

I hope you will gradually find comfort in all the happy memories. We are all blessed that your parents found their new life in Canada.

Sending our thoughts and love to you.
    Naomi and Grant
