PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, SERVICES PLANNED FOR FRIDAY, MAY 1 HAVE BEEN POSTPONED.  RESCHEDULED INFORMATION WILL BE POSTED ON THIS SITE AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Mary Hamilton (Chisholm) announce her passing on January 4, 2020, at the age of 80 at The Ottawa Hospital-General Campus after an extremely brief battle with cancer, which she fought so bravely.  As she gained her angel wings, she was surrounded by loving members of her family.

Born in Antigonish on September 1, 1939, Mary was the fourth child of the late Daniel and Florence (MacNeil) Chisholm.  As a young girl she moved to Pictou with her family and it was here that as a young adult she caught the eye of her one true love, George Hamilton.  They were married in 1961 and together spent the next 54 years enjoying their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  As a military family they moved to different cities and countries finally settling in Ottawa for the past 38 years.

Mary leaves behind a family that loved her beyond words including her son Paul and grandson Joss, her son David, daughter in law Evangeline (Angel), and granddaughters Kolleen (Alex Daigle) and Stacee.   She also leaves behind three great grandchildren.  Mary will also be sorely missed by her brothers Joe (Chris) of Fredericton, Bernard and Harold (Brenda) of Pictou and sisters Jean Thompson of New Glasgow, Janet Trites of Waterside, Joan (Elwood) Rankin of Meadowville, Eileen of Trenton and Barbara (Gary) Fraser of Pictou and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents Mary was predeceased by her husband George in 2016 and by her brothers Donnie, Billy, Charlie and John and sisters Rose and Bernadette.  She was also predeceased by her brother in laws  Norman Thompson, Peter Trites, George Murray and niece Donna Lynn.

Besides spending her time with family Mary thoroughly enjoyed sewing.  She was a very accomplished seamstress crafting hundreds of garments for family and friends. Her other passion in life was sports and the Montreal Canadians and the Toronto Blue Jays have just lost their number one fan.

A big thank you to the Radiation-Oncology team at TOH, especially Dr. K. Lupe and Dr. R. Goindy. They treated Mary with the utmost care, and we appreciate all their efforts.

Friends and family are invited to visit at the Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave, Ottawa on Friday May 1, 2020 from 10 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 11 am.  Interment at the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces.  A reception to follow will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 800 Taylor Creek Road, Orleans. In memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Although I hadn’t seen Mary in many years, I will always remember when she came to visit and babysit us at Camp Valcartier, Qc. She was a very pretty redhead who made the soldiers on the base take notice. We had a wonderful time with her. I know that she is sorrowfully missed by her family and friends - my sincere condolences to them. R.I.P. Mary.
