Reconciling History with Canada’s First Nations — Beechwood Cemetery’s program of national healing through truth and education


In fact, it was reconciliation of a different kind that first moved Blackstock, a member of the Gitksan First Nation, to visit Beechwood more than a decade ago. It was the eve of the June 11, 2008 Government of Canada apology to former students of Indian residential schools, and she had just learned that one of the few heroes of this dark and hurtful episode of Canadian history — health care visionary Dr. Peter Henderson Bryce — was buried at Beechwood Cemetery.
