On Saturday, August 10, 2019 Algirdas Petras Jurkus, aged 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Ottawa, Ontario.

He was born in Klaipeda, Lithuania in 1935 to Barbora and Domas Jurkus and was an older brother to Rimantas. After graduating from Ecole Polytechnique University in Montreal, Quebec in 1957, he received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Engineering from the University of Sheffield, England in 1960.

On September 12, 1964 he married Irena Beresnevicius with whom he raised three daughters, Ruta (1965), Rasa (1967) and Daiva (1972).

Algirdas was preceded in death by his father Domas, his mother Barbora, and his wife Irena. He is survived by his three daughters Ruta (Algis), Rasa (Augis) and Daiva (Dovas), his brother Rimantas (Marija), his seven grandchildren, Dziugas, Gytis, Brigita, Erika, Vincentas, Simona and Kamile as well as his nieces, Rima, Gintare, Zivile, Vida and his nephews Vytenis and Richard.

He had a passion for classical music. His other interests included astronomy, trains, bird watching as well as enjoying a good bottle of wine or scotch. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit.

A memorial service will be held in Ottawa on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Facility located at 280 Beechwood Avenue in Ottawa from 2:00-4:00pm.

We request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Please note that a burial ceremony will follow at a later date (still to be determined) in Mississauga Ontario.
